The Tale of Hill Top Farm

Author: Susan Wittig Albert
Rating: 3 Book Worms
My Opinion:

This is book is a short & sweet story set at the turn of the century in the English countryside. It is a fictional story written to fit around the actual events and happenings during the life of famed children's author Beatrix Potter. Ms. Potter is the main human character in this book which is filled with wonderful animal characters. Actually this is two stories in one. The main story of how Ms. Potter purchases a farm in the rural area of Sawrey. This has the local residents all in a ditther because no unmarried woman ever purchased a farm and actually expected to make it work. It was hard for some folk to accept while others immediately accept Ms. Potter along with her animal friends. When a villager dies unexpectedly Ms. Potter cannot help but take a closer look at the unusual circumstances. This turns out to be an interesting mystery for her to solve and helps her get her mind off the problems she has in her own life.

The parallel story of the animals who investigate their own mystery is filled with delightful characters like Galileo Newton Owl known as the Professor, Miss Tiggy-Winkle, Josey and Mopsey Rabbit, & Tom Thumb mouse. There are many other charming animals for you to discover as well.

This is a great book to share with your elementary age kids or grandkids. That being said don't think that adults won't like it. While this is not a slick fast moving story, it is a very relaxing read. Definately a must for a camping trip or day at the beach.

Buy It Or Borrow It: I recommend buying it because it is a good book to share with young readers as well as others. It is part of a series called the Cottage Tales. I am looking forward to reading the other books in the series.
