This is the new to me author I spoke of earlier. I enjoy her writing style which usually focuses on one character at a time then she ties it all up in the last few pages but this book moves away from that style. She generally builds her stories around a quilt or a quilting group. This book tells the story of a Freedom Quilt. Freedom quilts are quilts that were created by slaves in the Southern USA prior to the Civil War that would help them escape to freedom in the Northern States and Canada. They were handmade maps that depicted landmarks and directions within the design of the quilt.
This book is the story of Joanna who escaped from an unbearable situation where her master abused her. She made it to Pennsylvania and was sheltered by a family who cared for her while she waited out her pregnancy. After her son was born they planned to move her to Canada but before that could happen the slave hunters found her and drug her back to her former master. The book tells about Joanna's determination to return to the son she left behind in the North when she was recaptured and how she managed to piece together a quilt to help her remember how to get back to the farm to reclaim her son. This quilt was her salvation in more ways than she ever realized. It kept her will to be independent and free strong even when hope was dim. It helped her comfort her other children and it inspired her to never give up on her dream of freedom. The quilt was passed down and eventually made it's way into a museum where decendents of the family who helped her located it and piece together her story.
At times Joanna's story is harsh and sad but I think it gives a feel for how those times affected everyone involved with slavery. It was and is a terrible thing. It is beyond horrible for those who are slaves but it also brings out evil and terrible things in those who own slaves.
This book is a good piece of historical fiction that depicts the courage and strenth that women find within themselves and express through their handiwork. Quilting is an amazing art form and this story tells how it became a lifeline for the desparate people who desired their personal freedom so much that they risked everything they had, especially their lives to gain.

Lights Out Tonight
Author: Mary Jane Clark
Rating: 4 Book Worms
My Opinion:
Sometimes when we make a mistake it turns out much better than we could possibly expect. That's just what happened with this book for me. I was at the library looking for a Mary Higgins Clark book that I had not read. The mystery section in our library has some pretty high shelves especially if you are vertically challenged. I saw Mary and Clark so I quickly picked up this book. Somehow I got home and realized that I did not have the book I thought I had. I saved it until I had read all the other books I had borrowed. Finally this weekend I picked it up and started to read.
Oh my gosh! What a great book! I love the quick paced story and I like the way Ms. Clark breakes the story down into short fast paced chapters. It was the perfect "take along" book. I could read a chapter very quickly on a break, while wating at some of the incredibly long stop lights around town (seriously, we have some really looooong stop lights). The best thing about this book is I was surprised by the outcome. Usually I can figure out who done it pretty fast however not so in this book.
The story takes place at a New England Summer Theater that is producing a play that has all the ear marks of being a huge hit. The director hopes to make the leap to Broadway then to the Big Screen. He has a big name actress in Belinda Winthrop who guarantees instant success to any project associated with her name but she is not interested in doing the movie. She performs opening night with out flaw and to great reviews.
The New York movie and theater critic who is reviewing the play happens to be the second wife of a famous director who's adult daughter is working as Belinda's assistant at the theater. Meg struggles to find her place in the world. She turns to smoking pot to help her deal with the step mother who married her father about a year after her mother died. Try as she might Caroline cannot break through the wall of hostility Meg has erected around herself. Throw in an ex-con who is running a drug cartel out of a hidden cave on Belinda's country estate, a strange resident artist who is obsessed with Belinda, and Caroline's husband who for some reason doesn't really want to discuss his past connection to Belinda and you have no lack of suspects when Belinda turns up missing.
The unknown killer narrates part of the story giving this a rather creepy feel. The book starts out with two young adults who are killed because they took a photo with their telephone and the killer didn't like that so he forced their car off the road. Both young people died. Not long after that the town librarian is killed when she catches our killer tearing out an article from a magazine that was written about Belinda. To top all this off, Belinda comes up missing and we think dead. This is where the story begins to twist and turn rather quickly.
When the killer's identity was finally revealed I was totatly surprised. This story had many "Hitchock" like qualities. Nothing was as it seemed and right was wrong and wrong turned out to be right. This was a very fun book to read.
Buy it or Borrow It: It is really a toss up for me. I enjoyed this book very much but I don't know if I would read it over again because knowing who the killer is would ruin the story for me personally. I think I'll need to try some of her other books and we'll see if I decide to collect them.

The Cottage Tales of Beatrix Potter
Author: Susan Wittig Albert
Rating: 3.5 Bookworms
My Opinion:
Earlier I wrote about the first book in this very fun series of stories based on the actual events in the life of Beatrix Potter the famous children's book author. The three books in this series are:
These short books are truly enjoyable books. They are fictional stories complete with wonderful human and animal characters. Ms. Wittig Albert has a delightful way of telling the story from the human perspective as well as from the animal perspective.
The Tale of Holly How tels the story of a murder that takes place on a small farm. Ms. Potter is very helpful in the investigation and helps to discover who the murderer is. The little dog, Rascal, that helps her is a funny little character who really wants to believe he can communicate with his human friends. Tabitha Twitchit, Crumpet and Felicia, the village cats, suspect the the sheep on Ben Hornby's farm know who killed him so they set outwith Rascal to find the sheep who are missing.
There is a lot going on in this story beside the murder of Ben Hornyb and Ms. Potter finds herself right in the middle of it all.
The Tale of Cuckoo Brow Wood is the third book in the series and really deals with relationships of the human characters. There is a badly injured war hero who comes home with a ner-do-well wife. The whole village suspects she is a witch because she has red hair. Imagine how startled they are to discover that she is also an actress. While helping some young village children try to discover if any of the fairies still inhabit the woods, Ms. Potter accidentially discovers a terrible plot to ruin the village's hero and threatens the peaceful life they so much enjoy.
Of course the animals have a problem to resolve as well and it takes all the vast knowledge of Bosworth Badger and the Professor to come up with a plan to rescue a badger mother and son who are captive and about to be used as bait in a dog fight. All this and more captures you up in these wonderful stories.
Buy It or Borrow It: Definately buy these books especially if you have elementary aged children. These stories would be wonderful bedtime reading. The chapters are short and the story is gentle enough to ignite the imaginations of children and adults. Very fun reading.

Once Upon A Dreadful Time
Author: Dennis L. McKiernan
Rating: 3.75 Bookworms
My Opinion:
When I went back to the library to return the other 3 books I had in the Once Upon A Time series I discovered the fifth book in the series. I thought there should be a final book that resolved the struggle between the royalty of the Forrests of the Seasons and the evil wizzard Orbane. It just didn't feel complete. Sure enough there was book five on the shelf. Of course I had to read it.
In this book Dennis L. McKiernan takes us back to the world of Fairy recaping the experiences of each of the children of King Valray as they fought with the evil Orbane or one the four witch sisters to save their true love. As the family gathers for an annual festival at King Valary's castle the last living acrolyte, Hradian plots to obtain the key to the Dark Castle that holds Orbane prisoner. By casting a powerful spell she tricks Luc into giving her the key and hurries to free her master. The royal family discovers the theft and so begins the final struggle between good and evil that threatens all of Fairy and even the mortal world.
Once again the three fates offer assistance to the royal family in the form of riddles which must be solved in order to stop Orbane. Each of the sisters delivers her message to one of the knights who must lead the armies into battle. Orbane gains his freedom and quickly takes steps to defeat his enemies by casting the entire royal family into prison in the Dark Castle. They try in vane to escape but realize that they are helpless to defeat the clever enchantment without the key.
Of course the brave knights are desparate to find the royals but they also know they must prepare for the battle and so move forward with those preparations hoping that they can once again capture the key to the Dark Castle so they can rescue their loved ones. This battle is so dire that even the Elf King is drawn into the battle. This is diffucult for him because Orbane is his true son.
Can Orbane be stopped before he pollutes the River of Time? Can the royal family be rescued? Will the evil Hradian get the revenge for the deaths of her sisters? You will have to read on to find out.
Buy It Or Borrow It? Definately borrow it from your library. These are fun books to read but I doubt I would go back to them again. I think the world of Fairy is an interesting and wonderful place and I have enjoyed my vist. I will look for other books by this author because I think he creates believable characters and his stories are easily followed.

Once Upon A...
Author: Dennis L. McKiernan
Rating: 3.75 Bookworms
My Opinion:
Yet another series...It is amazing how much reading you can do when you can't use your hands. Dennis L. McKiernan writes on the premise that fairy tales were somewhere in time actual events that took place but over time ane retelling much of the story was forgotten or left out. He restores these tales of fairy for us in these delightful books. Of the four books in the series I have read three of them and if the fouth one is back at the library tomorrow I'll read it this week. The four books in this series are:
Once Upon a Winter's Night (the one I haven't read)
Once Upon a Summer Day
Once Upon an Autumn Eve
Once Upon a Spring Morn
These tales are all set in the wonderful world of farie. This is a mystical, magical part of our world that is separated by great walls of twilight. There are many lands in farie all filled with pixies, sprites, elves, ogers, trolls, gobblins, witches, wizards, princesses, princes, kings, and queens. There are even humans living in among all these various good and evil magic creatures. Each of these books tell a tale that involves one of four brothers and sisters. Each is the ruler of their own remarkable domain known as the Forests of the Seasons. Springwood is a land of eternal springtime where some trees are new-leafed while others are budding. The land is always just waking from the clutches of winter that never comes. Princess Celeste is the beautiful ruler of this gentle land. This is the land that borders the mortal world on once side and on the other lies the land known as Winterwood. Here the land is caught in eternal winter. Snow and ice clad the trees and great blizzards blow. It is beautiful but harsh and much loved by Prince Borel. Beyond the twilight border is Autumnwood which is the land of eternal fall. Fields are always ready for harvest, fruit trees are always ready to be plucked, gardens are always producing foods. Should you pick an apple from a tree it will be replaced the moment you are not looking. Trees are always dressed in beautiful fall colors. This domain is ruled by Princess Laize. Finally there is Summerwood which is the land of eternal summer. It is a region of beautiful fields, forrests, and a land where soft summer breezes blow along with the occasional thunder storm. Here Prince Alain is the master of the land.
Each of the siblings have an adventure that takes them across many enchanted lands and their quest helps them find their true love. Each must face challenges and defeat the forces of evil with the help of the Three Fates. They work together with the quirky characters they meet along the way to accomplish great deeds of valor and face terrible foes.
These are fun books based on popular fairy tales you will all recognize as the story is developed. These are the "unedited" restored versions so they make for fun grown up reading. I would not recommend the stories for children but teens and above would enjoy the escapades of these adventurers as they go about their quest.

The Dragonriders of Pern Series
Author: Anne McCaffrey
Rating: 4.0 Bookworms
My Opinion:
While I have been recovering from my hand surgeries I have been off line but I passed the time by reading. For years my sister Jacque has talked about the Dragonriders of Pern Series but I had not taken the time to read them. I like Anne McCaffrey and have read several of her other books so I can't really say why I put this series off for so long. At any rate later is better than never so here is my opinion of the lastest of the series I have read.
All the Weyrs of Pern
This picks up the story of Pern where the White Dragon left off...sort of. In this book Ms. McCaffrey brings the first settlers of Pern into focus through AVIS which is a massive computer that has stored the knowledge, history, science, and culture of the first settlers who came across space from a distant planet we all know and love. These early space travelers left Earth behind to colonize an new planet in the hope that they could create a better world for themselves and their children. They vowed to use only the minimum technology necessary to survive. They pledged to care for the natural resources and make the best use of their new world. Unfortunately they did not know about the dreaded Thread that threatened to destroy their fragile new world. Add to that the forces of nature and over time AVIS was forgotten only to be rediscovered by the present day leadership. This opened up the possiblitly that Thread could be destroyed forever. As the people were taught to use the "new" technology many of the older leaders were not willing or able to accept the change. As more and more changes came to their world it was bound to create friction and fear which caused some to resort to violence. Jaxom and the Weyrleaders must find a way to bring all the Lord Holders and Craft Halls together to work toward the goal of ending the attacks of Thread as well as end the internal strife.
The Dolphins of Pern
This story takes place alongside the above story so I am very glad that I read them close together. The first settlers brought along with them their technology, skills, knowledge, and unique partners. They brought dolphins that had been "enhanced" so that they could actually speak with the men they worked closely with. This helped the men map out the planet and the dolphins assisted the fishermen by locating schools of fish, warning of bad weather, and helping shipwrecked sailors. Over the 2500 years since the first settlers arrived and present day Pern this relationship had been forgotten by men. The dolphins however remembered and did their best to maintain their language skills. They were faithful to their purpose and still assisted men when possible. The dolphins waited for men to remember. This book starts with an exciting rescue of a small boy and his uncle by dolphins who speak with them. When AVIS learns of the experience he re-introduces the knowledge of dolphins to men and the young boy who was saved receives special training. His desire to become a dolphineer never leaves him. As the humans have more contact with dolphins they discover they have the ability to "read" the human body and help healers diagnois some illnesses. This is a great help to the people.
These stories are fun and well written. Ms. McCafferey has a wonderful imagination and in this series has created a marvelous world where dragons, fire-lizards, doplins, and men communicate to create a better life for themselves. I have enjoyed these books very much.
Buy It or Borrow It: I honestly think I'll try to buy this series. They were published a while ago so I'm not sure if they are still available but as we all know anything is possible on Amazon. Enjoy!

The Cradle Will Fall
Author: Mary Higgins Clark
Rating: 3 Bookworms
My Opinion:
This books starts out with a bang...literally. Katie DeMalo is an attorney who is involved in a car accident that lands her overnight in the hospital. While there she thinks she sees a body being loaded into a car during the middle of the night. She isn't sure if this is real or just a bad dream brought on by her accident and the drugs she was taking. Well she doesn't have time to worry about it for long. She is quickly involved in an apparent suicide that seems more like murder. As she investigates this new case she crosses paths with Richard Carrol who is the medical examiner who is assigned to the case. He takes more than a passing interest as he comes to appreciate Katie as a professional and as a friend. As the case rolls along Richard finds that he is more and more interested in Katie who seems to be hiding something from him. He doesn't want to push her to far because she is still trying to put the untimely death of her husband behind her. As he begins to suspect a famous doctor who happens to be practicing at the hospital where Katie stayed the night. As it happens Katie is one of his patients. These things all tie in together and come to a suspense filled climax when Katie needs surgery and guess who's the surgeon?
This another good straight forward suspense thriller by Ms. Higgins Clark. I enjoy her writing style very much and find her stories easy to read and interesting. She doesn't lose track of the purpose of her story or the direction she is leading us as we put together the clues.
Buy It or Borrow It: I would borrow it from a friend or library. Since this came from Deseret Industries it only cost fifty cents I bought it but I wouldn't pay full price which is probably pretty cheap but at $7.99 new I think it is a bit over priced. After all it is really a relatively short book.
