Author: Stephenie Meyer

Rating: 4.0 Bookworms

My Opinion

Stephanie Meyer is an author that is new to me and I must admit I was surprised by her subject matter given that she graduated from BYU and has a young family. Really - who would think that she would know so much about Vampires and Werewolves? I enjoyed reading these 3 books and am looking forward to book four which is due out in August. She has a light easy writing style that is very enjoyable to read. I breezed through all three books in one week but then I was slightly possessed and nothing else got done at my house. Gary was definately getting tired of me with my nose in a book every spare second. It's been a while since I was so engrossed in a story.

Twilight

This is a fairly perdictable classic love story but the twist is that an average human high school girl is strongly attracted to a not so average high school boy who just happens to be a "vegetarian" vampire. Their story is one that is filled with contrasting emotions and extreme highs and lows. Edward is strongly attracted to Bella Swan not only because she is his soulmate but her blood sings out to him. He has to constantly be on guard and fight against his nearly overwhelming desire for the taste of her blood. Bella is also strongly attracted to the beautiful if not slightly different Edward Cullen. After a very rough start they overcome the problems they are faced with and begin dating. Edward introduces Bella to his "family" which consists of Dr. Carlisle Cullen, his wife, Esme, Emmett, Rosalie, Jasper, & Alice. Of course since vampires can't have children the kids are all adopted into the family. Vampires tend to be solitary individuals so it is highly unusual for this many to be living together in peace. The fact that this family has made a choice to not drink human blood appears to help them exist in closer relation to one another.

Bella figures out that Edward and his family are vampires but not before she has fallen in love with Edward and realizes that she wants to be with him...always. Edward is very opposed to Bella becoming a vampire. Hanging out with vampires does have more that its share of dangers. Not only are they tempted to kill you on occasion you can make some really scary enemies. Edward and his family feel responsible enough to guard Bella from the evil vampire James who is determined to kill her. Edward saves her but not before James takes a bite. Edward gallantly sucks the poison from the wound which leaves her with a reminder of that narrow miss. After a near accident on her eighteenth birthday Edward chooses to leave Bella rather than continue to place her in constant danger from him or his family.

Moon Light

The saga continues with Bella dazed after Edward makes a clean break and the Cullen family move to LA. She has everyone around her concerned for her mental and physical health because she is so deeply depressed. For Bella life has ceased to have any meaning. Slowly she begins to pull herself out of the fog she exists in with the help of a young Indian boy named Jacob. He helps her laugh again and they forge a close friendship while Jacob helps Bella restore two old time motorcycles. Unfortunatley Jacob has some DNA issues himself. As it turns out he is a werewolf. (Note to self...Don't mess with the natives in Washington state.) Jacob has the misfortune to fall in love with Bella. She tries to discourage him but as they continue their friendship even Bella begins to believe that there is a possibility that she could be happy be with Jacob. Her heart belonged to Edward and always would but Jacob had the ability to make her feel safe and loved again. Things seem to be headed in that direction when Bella decides to do some cliff diving. Alice (Edward's sister) has a highly developed psychic ability to see the future and unfortunately see's Bella jump. She believes Bella is so depressed that she is trying to kill herself. She contacts the other members of the family so that they can find Edward to keep him from doing something rash. Oops...to late. Edward has vowed not to live in a world without Bella so he is bent on ending his life which isn't easy when you're a vampire. Bella is desparate to save him but will she make it in time?

Eclipse

In this book the story of the werewolf pack begins to unfold and because of a huge danger to
Bella the vampires and werewolves find that they must work together to fight against a vampire invasion that threatens to kill Bella and all the kind folks living in Forks, Washington. Once again Bella is saved from death but will she choose to continue the odd relationship with Edward or will she choose to have a somewhat more normal life with Jacob?

One of the things I like so much about these books is the subtle way that the author weaves in principals that can be applied to our daily lives. Each member of the Cullen family have faced horribly tragic circumstances when they were changed into vampires without any choice in the matter. As we all know, vampires prey on humans to drink our blood. Carlisle Cullen realized that he could do nothing about the circumstances that changed him into a vampire. He knew that he could not take a human life to sustaine his own. He found that he was able to exist by drinking animal blood. He helped each member of his family make that same choice. This clearly demonstrates that we can't always do anything about the circumstances that we must deal with but we do have the ability to control our reaction to them.

I highly recommend reading these books. The make a good vacation take along.

Buy It or Borrow It: I recommend buying especially if you like sicence fiction. I will go back an read them again later on because it is such a great story about looking at the best part of people and overcoming adversity.
