My Opinion:
Earlier I wrote about the first book in this very fun series of stories based on the actual events in the life of Beatrix Potter the famous children's book author. The three books in this series are:
The Tale of Hill Top Farm
The Tale of Holly How
The Tale of Cockoo Brow Wood
These short books are truly enjoyable books. They are fictional stories complete with wonderful human and animal characters. Ms. Wittig Albert has a delightful way of telling the story from the human perspective as well as from the animal perspective.
The Tale of Holly How tels the story of a murder that takes place on a small farm. Ms. Potter is very helpful in the investigation and helps to discover who the murderer is. The little dog, Rascal, that helps her is a funny little character who really wants to believe he can communicate with his human friends. Tabitha Twitchit, Crumpet and Felicia, the village cats, suspect the the sheep on Ben Hornby's farm know who killed him so they set outwith Rascal to find the sheep who are missing.
There is a lot going on in this story beside the murder of Ben Hornyb and Ms. Potter finds herself right in the middle of it all.
The Tale of Cuckoo Brow Wood is the third book in the series and really deals with relationships of the human characters. There is a badly injured war hero who comes home with a ner-do-well wife. The whole village suspects she is a witch because she has red hair. Imagine how startled they are to discover that she is also an actress. While helping some young village children try to discover if any of the fairies still inhabit the woods, Ms. Potter accidentially discovers a terrible plot to ruin the village's hero and threatens the peaceful life they so much enjoy.
Of course the animals have a problem to resolve as well and it takes all the vast knowledge of Bosworth Badger and the Professor to come up with a plan to rescue a badger mother and son who are captive and about to be used as bait in a dog fight. All this and more captures you up in these wonderful stories.
Buy It or Borrow It: Definately buy these books especially if you have elementary aged children. These stories would be wonderful bedtime reading. The chapters are short and the story is gentle enough to ignite the imaginations of children and adults. Very fun reading.
